Exploring Kruger National Park: A Heritage Gem
As Heritage Month graces our calendar, South Africans eagerly embrace the warmer days of spring and prepare for Heritage Day, affectionately known as National Braai Day on 24 September. This year's theme, "Celebrating our cultural diversity in a democratic South Africa," sheds light on the treasure trove that is Kruger National Park, an integral part of our heritage.
**1. An Official Wonder Of The World**
In the annals of history, Hellenic travelers once marveled at seven extraordinary structures, immortalizing them in artwork, literature, and guides during the Middle Ages. Fast forward to the year 2000, when the New 7 Wonders Foundation, based in Switzerland, felt it was time to redefine the list of wonders. They undertook this endeavor because only one of the original wonders, the Pyramids of Giza, still graced the Earth.
Nearly two decades later, the UK-based AllClear agency scrutinized the global landmarks by analyzing Wikipedia page views data for over 4,300 renowned sites over the past five years. In this meticulous evaluation, our own Kruger National Park emerged as South Africa's foremost "Wonder of the World." This recognition solidified the park's position as the most captivating destination in our nation.
**2. Unique Flora and Fauna During Spring**
The park's allure remains constant throughout the year, but for those fortunate enough to visit during Heritage Month or spring, a special treat awaits. Spring marks the dry season, a time when animals congregate around watering holes due to the scarcity of these life-sustaining sources. Anton Gillis, CEO at Kruger Gate Hotel, elaborates, "This season offers a prime opportunity to witness the park's captivating wildlife as they gather near these precious water sources."
The park is also a haven for botanical enthusiasts, boasting an impressive array of flora. With 1,982 plant species scattered throughout Kruger, spring unveils a spectacle of wildflowers, including the resplendent African Flame Lilies, Sabi Stars, and Leopard Orchids.
The African Flame Lily, characterized by its scarlet or yellowish-green flame-like petals, thrives despite the harsh dry season, sprouting from an underground tuber. Sabi Stars, also known as Impala Lilies, make a dazzling appearance towards the end of the dry season, gracing the landscape with vibrant splashes of deep pink—a harbinger of impending rains. It's worth noting that these plants contain a highly toxic watery latex, historically used on the tips of hunters' arrows and as a means to stun fish during hunts.
Nestled along the banks of the iconic Sabie River at the Paul Kruger Gate, the Kruger Gate Hotel offers an ideal base for exploring the park's diverse flora and fauna. Gillis points out, "Beside the river, in hot and arid patches, you'll discover the Leopard Orchid—a fragrant bloom adorned with brown spots reminiscent of a leopard's coat, only visible from August to September."
**3. Symbiotic Animal Relationships**
While Kruger National Park is renowned for its majestic Big Five, including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, and buffalos, it's equally captivating for the remarkable symbiotic relationships that thrive within its boundaries. Gillis emphasizes, "Oxpeckers, those small parasitic birds, engage in astounding partnerships with elephants, impalas, and rhinos." These red-billed oxpeckers, known as "askari wa kifaru" in Swahili or "the rhino's guard," perch on their mammal companions, feasting on ticks and parasites, providing a valuable cleaning service.
Another intriguing partnership in the park unfolds between impalas and baboons. Impalas, unable to access the sausage fruit of the Kigelia tree, collaborate with their baboon counterparts. The sausage fruit, aptly named for its elongated, thick-skinned, sausage-like appearance, poses a challenge due to its tough exterior. Gillis explains, "Impalas, unable to chew through the fruit's formidable skin on their own, readily enjoy the sausage fruit scraps left by their baboon friends."
**4. A Culturally Rich Heritage**
Situated on the southern tip of Kruger National Park lies an opportunity to connect with the Shangaan people, who have called this region home since the 19th century. This indigenous group's origin traces back to Soshangane (Manukosi), dispatched by King Shaka of the Zulu to confront the Tsonga people in southern Mozambique during the turbulent Mfecane upheaval. Instead, Soshangane stumbled upon a harmonious community, chose to settle, and diverged from Shaka's intended task.
The Shangaan culture is a captivating fusion of Nguni and Tsonga traditions, marked by a rich tradition of storytelling, music, and dance. Furthermore, they have nurtured their own musical instruments, such as the "fayi," akin to a flute, and the "xitende," a braced-bow instrument crafted from a leather thong.
Today, the Shangaan people inhabit the park's vicinity, the Drakensberg Mountains, and the broader Mpumalanga region. In February 1999, the Shangana Cultural Village emerged with the dual purpose of job creation and tourism promotion. Here, visitors can delve deeper into Shangaan culture, acquire their unique art, and be captivated by the stories passed down through generations.
As a final note, if you plan to explore Kruger National Park during National Parks Week (16 - 24 September), you can enjoy complimentary park entry by presenting your South African identity documents. This annual initiative by SANParks allows citizens to experience the wonders of our nation's parks and connect with their rich heritage.
